About Debi Riley

Debi Riley — Watercolour Artist & Educator

Welcome

Painter, Teacher, Creative

I am glad you stopped by. This is a space for artists at every level — from those picking up a brush for the very first time, to experienced painters looking to see things differently.

For many years I have been exploring the expressive potential of watercolour, oil, and mixed media. My work is rooted in a belief that art is not just something you make — it is a way of seeing, feeling, and being present in the world.

I am particularly drawn to landscapes, light, and the emotional resonance of colour. Whether it is the blues of an ocean coastline, the warmth of outback earth, or the quiet drama of a tree against an open sky — I find the world endlessly paintable.

For beginner watercolourists, there is a wealth of technique and guidance throughout the blog and in my online courses. For those with more experience, I hope you find inspiration, ideas, and the occasional challenge to see things a little differently.

“The world needs each one of us to be an artist. To think like an artist. Now.”

My Approach to Making Art

🎨

Colour as Language

Colour communicates what words cannot. I explore the full emotional range of a palette — from the quiet restraint of a monochrome to the joyful exuberance of complementary contrast.

Seeing Differently

Great art begins with great observation. I encourage every student and fellow artist to slow down, look closer, and discover the extraordinary within the ordinary.

Creative Freedom

Rules are a starting point, not a destination. Once you understand the fundamentals, the real work begins — finding your own voice, your own mark, your own way of seeing.

Studio Practice

Mediums & Techniques

A multi-media practice rooted in watercolour, with frequent explorations in oils, acrylics, and mixed media.
